Two southern Maine school districts are receiving Automated External Defibrillators, or AEDs, in part thanks to the mission of a mom from Pennsylvania. The AEDs are being donated to Westbrook and Portland through the Gorham-Westbrook Rotary Club, and members of the group, Parent Heart Watch.

The group's founder, Rachel Moyer, has been touring the country ever since her son, Gregory, died of cardiac arrest at a varsity basketball game in 2000. It took more than 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive and doctors at the Pennsylvania hospital he was taken to believe he could have survived if the school had had an AED.

Moyer said she will not put a tombstone at Gregory's grave until there's an AED in every school in the country. Moyer said, "You have to look at it as your child didn't die in vain, your children didn't have a chance to establish a legacy for themselves, so we need to do one for them."

Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States. The American Heart Association estimates AEDs in public places could save as many as 80,000 lives a year.
